Pre-video advertising on YouTube costs user time and is considered harassment. When a person sits down to watch a 30 second video as they prepare to leave for work, they do not have an additional 15 seconds to watch inane advertisements for products they need not and couldn’t care less for. YouTube advertising is harassing, time consuming, provocative and unpleasant for all users.
YouTube, however, is being forced into this by a massive operating deficit. YouTube is unable to pay for the massive amounts of data transmitted over its servers.
“YouTube sends a staggering 1,000 gigabytes of data every second,” reported one blog from 2008. “YouTube spends roughly $1 million a day just to pay for the bandwidth.”
Even with its new ad campaign, some speculate that YouTube will not be able to sustain itself for another five years. “If the current rate of growth continues without substantial payout, YouTube won’t last another half-decade,” stated an anonymous source.
